Now-a-days kids face a lot of skin related problems. When we researched on why do they frequently face these problems, to our surprise we found out that, kids face skin infections not only because of air quality-climate change-dust-insects but also due to wrong washing techniques of the clothes they wear. So we thought to jot down our findings, the do’s and don’ts of washing kids clothes. 

Many of us use powered detergents to wash clothes. At the time of washing there are chances that due to improper rinsing of clothes, the residue of these detergents will be left over on the clothes. The left over detergents might come in contact with the skin of the kids and they will have a harmful effect on their skin therefore leading to skin infections and other harmful diseases. There might be bleach or any harmful compositions mixed in these detergents as well.Hence it is very advisable to use liquid detergents. These liquid detergents don’t have the above negative/harmful effects and are in turn are user friendly in nature.

A small technique from PKC for the freshly turned ladies into mothers on how to wash their kids clothes:

In a bucket of water add either reetha (Kunkudukayalu in Telugu) lather or 5-6 teaspoonful of vinegar and soak the clothes in the solution. By doing this the soaked clothes will be free of any infections i.e., they are disinfectant.

How do I keep my black trousers black?

1. Avoid excessive washings.

2. If black trousers are primarily wore indoors- you can get away with wearing them four or five times between washings.

3. When the washing machine is ready to load, turn the trousers inside out to minimize color loss caused by the friction from rubbing against other clothes, then choose a small, delicate cycle. The colder the temperature, the better, since warm water tends to break down fibers and fade clothes faster. 

4. Then hang or lay the pants flat to dry, don’t throw them in the dryer(as the lint in the dryer drum gets accumulated on to these black trousers)

5. Steam Iron the black trousers for better look and feel.

What do I need to do in succeeding to start a business ?

Business is all about 1% Idea and 99% execution. There are many great ideas which have fallen flat due to lack of execution. Many people will say that try to start a business in your interest areas and you will definitely succeed. But according to me, a business is basically finding a solution to a problem, be it your area of interest or not. If it is your area of interest it will be the best case scenario but literally doesn’t matter.

How to succeed in starting a business:

Following are the points which one should have answers so that they can succeed in starting a business-

1. Type of Industry they want to enter

2. How big is the problem they are solving, and does it last long?(is the problem being faced by 1-billion people?

3. Does the solution already exist in the market? If yes, how different is your solution different from them

4. Have you done enough research before biting the bullet?(Reading successful persons stories in your industry just gives you a 20-30% chance but following people those who’ve failed will give you 80-90% chance to succeed as you can learn from their mistakes)

5. In the end how committed are you towards starting is all what matters. Come what may give your 100% success will be all yours!

Do I really need to sort my garments before washing and why is it necessary ??

In a single word, it's definitely YES.

If you put all Whites, Undergarments, Jeans, and Towels into the same load, you could wind up with dye transfer, lint, pilling, and even snags and holes.

Sorting laundry really isn’t so hard as you think. Especially if you presort the work is even more simpler and the garments will have more life.

Divide the garments in the following way-

1. Whites,

2. Dark Colors,

3. Light Colors,

4. Dry-clean-only items.

Then, when you’re ready to wash, sort those color piles by fabric type, so you’re washing heavy jeans or lint-producing bath towels separately from blouses, dress slacks, and undergarments.

This lets you use the correct water temperature and keep the drying time less, instead of over drying your T-shirts in order to get your towels dry.

Finally, if there are any heavily soiled linen specially with an oil stains they should be definitely washed separately, to prevent odors or stains transferring to other linen.

The best way forward is to follow the garment’s care label, because the manufacturer has tested what’s best for the item before selling it. But then, it depends on the fabric as well. Velvet, Leather, and Silk cannot withstand the roughness of the washing machine and don’t do well in water. Nylon, Polyester, and Spandex hold up well to delicate cycles or hand wash, in water slightly above room temperature. This is ideal if people don’t have time to get to the dry cleaner or simply want to extend the time to go to a drycleaner. 

But in the end if the life of the garment has to be sound and long, then it is better if you give it to a dry-cleaner, as they know how to handle the garment!

Here is the answer-

 

1. Dry cleaning process uses a chemical solvent to rinse the garments. It is called ‘dry’ cleaning because water is not used in the cleaning process. The traditional wet laundering method involves the immersion of your clothes in water. 

 

2. Dry cleaning process is done using the chemical perchloroethylene to remove stains and grease from clothing. 

Laundry cleaning uses cleaning agents like soaps, detergents or softeners along with water to remove dirt from clothing. 

 

Advantages of Dry-Cleaning:

 

* Effectively removes grease and tough to remove oil stains. 

* Shrinkage and distortion of the fabric can be reduced

* Discoloration and color bleeding will be reduced

* The fabric texture can be retained same as the original one

* Protects texture and increases the lifespan of clothes.

* We’ve started using started to use bio-degradable chemicals which are not harmful to the environment. These chemicals/solvents do not produce odor and clothes smell fresher and feel better.

Advantages of Laundry Cleaning

 

* It is also called as wet cleaning as water is used in the process

It is much cheaper as the solvent used is water and detergent or softener, and these give a freshness to your clothes.

* Wet laundering is energy efficient; it consumes 50% less energy than the energy used for dry cleaning.

* Usage of chemicals is reduced in the laundry process

Scope of the online laundry service in India:

The Internet has been a boon to the consumer industry. Starting from Food -Groceries -Utensils-Furniture-Automobiles-Consumer Electronics-Consumer Durables-Clothes-Laundry and you name anything it can be delivered online in a ‘jiffy’

The largest players in the e-commerce/food space are- Amazon/Flipkart/Swiggy/Zomato

Off late laundry is also making its presence in the hyperlocal delivery segment

Laundry should be done according to the worth and the market cannot be captured by giving hefty discounts like the other giants in the consumer tech space.

The biggest challenge is the logistics which is the backbone of the online consumer space

Here is a small comparison between the Delivery Processes of an E-Commerce/Food and Laundry Companies:

A. Delivery process(E-Commerce/Food Delivery)

E-Commerce:

Customer places an order — Company — Vendor/Fulfillment Centers — Customer

Food Delivery:

Customer places an order — Company — Restaurants/Cloud Kitchens — Customer

B. Laundry delivery process:

Customer places an order — Company — Delivery Executive goes to the customer (pick-up the clothes) — Process the clothes (factory) — Delivery Executive deliveries the clothes back to the customer

*There will be a lot of sentiments attached to the clothes and that is the biggest risk

So the basic driving point here is the delivery guy should go twice to a customer’s place which is same as picking a defective product from a customer in the e-commerce context i.e., ‘return product’.

Normal pickup and delivery of clothes is as good as ‘returning a product in the e-commerce’. At the time of delivery, the customer will check the quality for around 20–30 min. If there is any quality issue they will return them back and again we should deliver. So it is as good as ‘returning a product’ TWICE in the e-commerce terminology

Comparison between E-commerce/Food/Laundry Deliveries:

As per industry standards for e-commerce segment the return ratepercentages are-

1. Industry standards- 30%

2. Flipkart- 15–20%,

3. return percentage for Amazon- 5.5%,

But when it comes to the online laundry industry it is 100% return all the time when compared with the e-commerce space

So, online laundry service cannot be compared to Flipkart, Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Ola or with anyone who provide their services online

In my view as a laundry consultant if the following points are followed judiciously then there is a lot of scope/growth for the ‘online’ laundry segment to prosper-

1. Pricing: 

Price your service accordingly without hefty discounts. Once the investments die down this segment cannot get back on its legs like the other e-commerce or the food delivery companies

2. Quality: 

Quality should be given the topmost priority without which there will be no return customers

3. Delivery Time:

 Promise the customer if you are only 100% sure of delivering the clothes on time. If there is any issue inform him prior to the delivery date

4. Stain Removals: 

The stains cannot be removed 100% but make sure that the same will be conveyed to the customers properly

The laundry industry is itself a 2.2L cr industry and the organized sector is under 5% and the rest is still unorganized. So there is definitely a lot of scope. But keeping all these constant it is time that the laundry industry shows it’s really worth to the customers.

1. Land

Once the person has enough insight on the industry then the next important step is to find out a suitable land on where to start the plant/factory. The place of processing is very important in three ways. There are three important points to be noted while choosing a place for setting up a laundry

Water should be adequate as it is the heart of a laundry setup, the water in the location should be of a low ppm and there should be adequate water even during the summer season

The overall logistics should be less from the selected location

The land (factory) should be compliant with the laws of the government (if it is in the city limits then there might be chances that the government will not give full permission to run the show).

2. Plant Layout

Once the location of the plant is finalized next comes the plant layout. In the layout we will have a draft of the actual setup. Where will the machines be placed, which machine comes first, how much space should be left for hand wash etc.

3. Equipment Planning

In this stage we will plan on which equipment to purchase, which brand, capacity of the machinery and other factors. As equipment plays a major role and it takes the bulk of the investment in the laundry setup one should be very much careful while planning for the equipment.

One should be very careful to check if the after service part is as good as the sales part. Because once the machinery is purchased it should run for a good 6-7 years for this to happen the service part should be sorted out.

4. Electrical Planning

Electrical planning is one of the important parts of a laundry setup. First we should know how much input power we actually need and then take a 10-20% percent more on the actuals. 

This helps us in shielding from paying the ACD (Additional Consumption Deposit) charges year over year. As the laundry is a mechanized one electrical planning should be done without any errors.

5. Plumbing

Plumbing is also one of the important divisions in a laundry plant. Pipes through which water is passed to the machines should be aligned properly and they should be leak proof. 

If there is a single leak then the whole plant will be damp and the work will be halted. Plumbing should be done very precisely and at the same time neat and crisp. It should be done in a haphazard way.

In my experience I’ve seen that many laundry owners have spent a lot on plumbing work but on the other hand if they were careful from the start then the money spent by them would have been much lesser

6. Chemicals Planning

Right chemicals add up to the quality of the service. So choosing chemicals is also one of the finer points. The important point is with less investment on chemicals we can bring more quality but at the same time if we do not have enough knowledge on chemicals we can lose more money and on top of that the quality can also be degraded. 

Also chemicals will be suggested depending on the type of client we provide our service. Clients require a specific type of chemicals to be used, depending on the pricing and other things we will specify the brand of chemicals to be used

7. Manpower Planning

Manpower planning is one of the toughest and challenging tasks in a laundry industry. Without manpower nothing can be achieved in this industry. The person who is running the show should have that knack of maintaining people. 

As 90% of the people working here will be blue collar workers, it is very important to maintain and make them work. If this segment is cracked then laundry business will be one of the best. Hence manpower planning should be strategized very smartly and no errors should creep in.

8. Pricing

Pricing is the make or break of any industry. Prices should be competitive and at the same time workable for us. We should not go very less or very high, and this point should be very thoroughly thought off.  We should not give anything for free or at a discounted price.
